Piston Crown reconditioning
Piston crowns are very critical engine components operating inside the cylinder under high temperatures and pressure. They are affected by poor combustion, injector performance, cylinder liner condition, and issues with lubrication.
Typical issues encountered are:
- Excessive wear of piston grooves
- Thermal cracks on the combustion surface
- Cracking or peeling off on the chrome layer
Inspection:
Piston crowns received in our workshop after chemical cleaning and shot blasting, undergo a thorough inspection including detailed measurements and visual checks, checking of chrome layer thickness with leptoscope and dye check for detection of cracks. A detailed report including the proposed recondition process will be prepared.
Based on the findings we perform the following standard recondition procedure on the piston crown:
- Pre-machining of piston crown grooves and diameter
- Full rebuilding of piston grooves and diameter by submerged arc welding
- Annealing in a digitally controlled annealing oven
- CNC machining of oversize grooves and chrome plating preparation
- Hard chrome plating of piston grooves with 0,5mm per side plating thickness
- Grinding of grooves to standard dimensions with a special grinding machine for achieving groove surfaces parallelism
Additionally, we recondition of top surface including optional cladding with Inconel for additional protection against wear.
All our recondition procedures include automated welding, preheating, and heat treatment in annealing furnaces and in-house chrome plating and grinding in order to produce a perfect result. For piston skirts, after inspection, we renew worn-out copper bands with new and machine to standard dimensions.
