MAN B&W 9K 90MC-C Piston Rod Reconditioning with Laser Cladding

by | Oct 10, 2025 | CASE STUDY

INJEGOV completed the reconditioning of nine MAN B&W 9K 90MC-C piston rods using robotic laser cladding, restoring hardness, roughness, and dimensions to MAN standards for enhanced reliability and extended service life.

Scope of Work

INJEGOV carried out the complete reconditioning of nine (9) piston rods from a MAN B&W 9K 90MC-C main engine. The rods had reached critical wear levels and required advanced treatment to restore their operational reliability and extend service life.

Thanks to INJEGOV’s advanced workshop infrastructure—equipped with two robotic laser cladding machines—the reconditioning of all nine piston rods was completed within just two weeks. This capability ensures not only high-quality and precise results but also significantly reduced turnaround times, minimizing vessel downtime and improving operational efficiency.

Work Process

Inspection & Measurements

The piston rods underwent thorough inspection, including verification of fundamental dimensions, hardness measurements, and crack detection tests to ensure structural integrity before proceeding with reconditioning.

Cleaning & Machining

Each piston rod was thoroughly cleaned to remove contaminants and residues before machining. The components then underwent rough and pre-machining processes to remove surface imperfections and prepare them for precise dimensional restoration during the reconditioning phase.

Welding & Laser Cladding

Each piston rod was pre-heated and carefully prepared for welding to ensure optimal bonding and metallurgical integrity. Seven of the rods were treated with direct robotic laser cladding on the working surface, while two previously reconditioned rods underwent an initial SAW welding process, followed by pre-machining and a final robotic laser cladding application to achieve uniform surface properties and durability.

Stress Relieving & Quality Control

After welding, the piston rods underwent a controlled stress relieving process while rotating under thermal insulation to eliminate internal stresses and ensure material stability. Following this, each rod was subjected to a magnetic particle inspection (MPI) to verify the absence of surface or subsurface cracks, confirming the structural integrity of the reconditioned parts.

Final Machining & Superfinishing

Each piston rod was machined to precise MAN B&W specifications, ensuring accurate dimensional conformity. The components then underwent grinding and superfinishing to achieve the required surface tolerances, followed by detailed recording of final hardness and surface roughness readings to verify full compliance with MAN quality standards.

If you are seeking a reliable partner for Piston Rod Reconditioning with Laser Cladding, INJEGOV is here to support you.

Results

  • All nine piston rods were successfully reconditioned.

  • Final hardness values: 480–520 HB, according to MAN requirement of 400 HB.

  • Final roughness values: 0.180–0.280 µm, within the MAN acceptance criteria of <0.40 µm.

  • Dimensional checks confirmed compliance with MAN quality standards.

This comprehensive process restored the piston rods to manufacturer specifications, ensuring extended component life, cost savings, and reliable engine performance.
