Jenbacher 420 misfire troubleshooting

by | Jul 12, 2024 | CASE STUDY

Explore our case study on solving misfire issues in the Jenbacher 420 biogas engine, emphasizing preventive maintenance, proper installation, and quality parts for optimal performance.

Introduction

The Jenbacher 420 biogas engine is a vital component in renewable energy systems, known for its robustness and efficiency. However, like all complex machinery, it requires diligent maintenance to ensure optimal performance and longevity. This case study delves into a specific misfire issue encountered in cylinder number 5 of a Jenbacher 420 biogas engine, emphasizing the importance of adhering to recommended service intervals and preventive maintenance practices.

Initial Observation

The misfire issue in cylinder number 5 first became evident through irregular engine performance. Inspection revealed oil contamination on the spark plug, both on the porcelain part and within the combustion chamber. This prompted a deeper investigation to uncover the root cause.

Diagnosis with an Endoscope

To begin with, using an endoscope, we inspected the interior of cylinder 5. The endoscopic examination revealed the presence of coolant inside the cylinder and on the piston crown. This indicated a leakage within the cylinder head. Afterwards, the location of the leakage was identified between the O-rings and metal sealing rings of the spark plug sleeve and the cylinder head.

Technical Analysis

Causes of the Leakage

Consequences of Coolant Leakage

Misfires

Coolant in the combustion chamber can interfere with ignition, causing incomplete combustion and misfires.

Spark Plug Fouling

Oil and coolant contamination on the spark plug can lead to fouling, further exacerbating misfire issues.

Engine Damage

Continuous coolant exposure can cause corrosion and damage to the piston and cylinder walls, potentially leading to more severe engine failures.

Importance of Preventive Maintenance

Adherence to Service Intervals

Regular maintenance according to the manufacturer’s recommended service intervals is crucial. These intervals are designed to ensure that all components are inspected, serviced, and replaced as necessary before failure.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Check the wear and tear of the sleeve, even though it is not included in the overhaul necessary parts. However, INJEGOV, with a very detailed approach, noticed this issue and prevented a problem that would occur after the overhaul.

Preventive Measures

1. Quality Parts

Using high-quality replacement parts that meet OEM specifications ensures better performance and durability.

2. Proper Installation Techniques

Following proper installation procedures and torque specifications is essential to maintain the integrity of seals and other components. Re-machining of the sleeve contact surface is necessary and a high-pressure leakage test must be carried out before installing the cylinder head.

3. Training and Expertise

Ensuring that maintenance personnel are adequately trained and knowledgeable about the engine’s specific requirements can significantly reduce the risk of maintenance-related issues.

Conclusion

The misfire issue in cylinder number 5 of the Jenbacher 420 biogas engine highlights the critical importance of preventive maintenance and adherence to service intervals. Regular maintenance, timely inspections, and the use of quality parts are essential to prevent issues like coolant leakage and misfires. This case study serves as a reminder of the vital role that preventive maintenance plays in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of biogas engines, minimizing downtime, and extending the operational life of the equipment.

By following these best practices, operators can ensure the optimal performance of their biogas engines, thereby supporting sustainable energy initiatives and enhancing overall operational efficiency.
