Complete Overhauling of MAN B&W 6S60MC-C Main Engine and Auxiliary Systems

by | Nov 1, 2025 | CASE STUDY

Complete overhauling of a MAN B&W 6S60MC-C main engine, including full mechanical inspection, pump and motor servicing, and governor calibration. All works completed within maker’s limits, ensuring reliable operation and extended service life.

Project Overview

In July 2025, a complete mechanical overhauling was performed on a vessel equipped with a MAN B&W 6S60MC-C main engine.
The scope included the overhaul of the main engine and its auxiliary systems—engine room pumps, electric motors, heat exchangers, and diesel generator governors.
All procedures were executed according to the manufacturer’s standards, ensuring full operational reliability and compliance.

System Scope of Work
MAN B&W 6S60MC-C Main Engine Complete six-cylinder overhaul, bearing and deflection verification
E/R Pumps Overhauling, machining, impeller and wear ring renewal
Electric Motors Overhaul, bearing renewal, dynamic balancing
Heat Exchangers Chemical and mechanical cleaning
Governors Full overhaul, calibration, and bench testing
Verification Performance confirmation during sea trials

Main Engine Overhauling

The MAN B&W 6S60MC-C underwent a complete six-cylinder overhaul involving:

  • Dismantling and reinstallation of six cylinder covers

  • Workshop overhauling of cylinder heads, including cleaning, inspection, and hydraulic pressure testing

  • Overhaul of pistons and piston rods, calibration, liner wear measurement, and reassembly with new piston rings

  • Dismantling, cleaning, and renewal of stuffing box rings

  • Bearing and guide shoe clearance measurements (crosshead, connecting rod, main, and thrust bearings)

  • Crankshaft deflection measurements before and after overhauling

  • Final verification during sea trials

All measurements were found within maker’s limits, confirming proper alignment and mechanical integrity.

Engine Room Pumps and Machine Works

The scope included the complete overhauling of centrifugal and auxiliary pumps such as:

  • GS/Fire & IGS SW pumps

  • EGCS SW pumps

  • Main Cooling and Ballast pumps

  • Cargo Oil and Vacuum pumps

Each pump was dismantled, cleaned, and reassembled with owner-supplied spares. Machining works were carried out on impellers and shafts, including fabrication and fitting of brass or stainless-steel wear rings and precision balancing.
The repairs restored proper clearances and extended the service life of the components.

Electric Motors

A total of 15 electric motors (37–160 kW) were overhauled, including units for auxiliary blowers, ballast pumps, supply fans, and boilers.
Each motor underwent:

  • Full disassembly and cleaning

  • Bearing renewal

  • Insulation resistance (megger) testing

  • Dynamic balancing of rotors and fans

  • Reinstallation and on-board testing

These processes ensured stable operation and optimal motor efficiency.

Heat Exchangers

Two heat exchange systems were serviced during the project:

  • Main Engine L.O. Cooler (183 plates) — cleaned chemically in situ via recirculation

  • Auxiliary Condenser — mechanically cleaned, inspected, and reassembled with new gaskets

Both systems were restored to maximum cooling efficiency and operational reliability.

Governors

Three ZEXEL diesel generator governors were fully overhauled.
Each governor was disassembled, cleaned, inspected, and reassembled with new seals, bearings, and gaskets.
All units were tested on the workshop test bench and adjusted to the manufacturer’s calibration standards to ensure precise speed control and stability.

Results and Verification

Following completion of the works:

  • All readings (bearing, crankshaft, piston crown, and liner measurements) were within manufacturer tolerances

  • Crankshaft alignment confirmed through before/after deflection comparison

  • Sea trials validated smooth operation and fuel-efficient performance

The project achieved extended service life, optimal reliability, and reduced downtime across all overhauled systems.
